EUROETHICS Overview
EUROETHICS is an extension of the Euroethics Health Network (EHN), a standardised,
labour-dividing European information and database network on biomedical ethics.
From 1996 to 1999 the European Commission supported the "Establishment
of a European Database Network" through the BIOMED-2 Programme. With
the help of this funding, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden established
the Euroethics Health Network, that will now be extended to new European partners.
National databases have been joined together into the unified European Database
on Medical Ethics EUROETHICS. The database currently comprises over 11,500
documents (currently searchable via www.dimdi.de).
Following on its successful implementation and wide acceptance, the EHN intends to substantially expand the scope of its activities by expanding its groups of users, by integrating new partners from further European countries and by establishing value-added information products.
The following partners are joining forces to expand the EUROETHICS database:
- KIB – Karolinska Institutet, Library, Stockholm, Sweden (http://www.kib.ki.se/)
- ETHOX – ETHOX, Institute of Health Sciences, Oxford University, United Kingdom (http://www.ethox.org.uk/)

ENDEBIT Overview
Given the tremendous speed of biotechnological innovation, the increasing importance to think clearly and critically about the ethics of biotechnology have led to a wide-ranging discussion: The implications and consequences of biotechnological innovations for health, ecology, economy, legislation and society from an ethical perspective have become more and more complex. It is therefore important that scientific experts and the public are provided with an effective and efficient access to sources of information that document the state of research and the debates to which it has given rise. The fields of research and documentation covered by ENDEBIT span the entire spectrum of biotechnology ethics or ”green” bioethics. An extension of the network into further countries—particularly in view of the enlargement of the EU—is planned.
The goal of the European Network of Documentation for Ethics of Biotechnology (ENDEBIT) project is to create a European information database on the internet where the literature on the ethics of non-medical biotechnology is documented with comprehensive bibliographical information and can be searched by means of a common multi-lingual index.
Literature searches are carried out via the Web (http://www.endebit.net). The content of a series of networked databases across Europe can be accessed by means of specific keywords so that the current state of research and discussion can be surveyed in a systematic and comprehensive manner. In a further step, other information services will be added that will simplify the users’ access to documents and information about the authors and institutions with expertise in the area of ethics of non-medical biotechnology.
Together with the medical-ethically oriented documentation project EUROETHICS and a joint webpage, ENDEBIT is part of the ”European Information Network Ethics in Medicine and Biotechnology” (EURETHNET), funded by the 5th framework programme of the EU since 2002.
This network, which comprises 26 European partners, plays an essential role in the establishment of a European debate on issues relating to ethics in biomedicine and biotechnology.
ENDEBIT consists of partners in a total of seven European countries:
- Interdepartmental Center for Ethics in Sciences and Humanities (IZEW), University of Tübingen (Project Co-ordinator)
- Ethics Institute, Utrecht University, the Netherlands (http://www.ethics.uu.nl/)
- Center for Education, Research and Information on Science and Society (CERISS) in Milan, Italy
- National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) in Paris, France (http://www.inra.fr/)
